Philosophy of Taekwon-Do
Although the literal translation of the word Taekwon-do is the art of kicking and punching (Tae - to kick, Kwon - to punch, DO - way, art) this is nothing more than a literal translation. In Korea, DO means a philosophical approach to the path of life, a path to achieving enlightenment. A true student of Taekwon-do applies this art to all aspects of his life in order to achieve harmony with nature and thus a stable and peaceful life. Taekwon-do is not just an excellent method of self-defense, it is also a way of life. These characteristics can be traced back to the influence of Buddhism and its goal of "mastery over oneself." With the help of the philosophy of Taekwon-do, a student can free himself from his "I" and live in harmony with the universe. At the center of this philosophy is the concept of the interaction of two opposing forces of nature (Yin and Yang). Self-control is achievable only on the condition that these forces are equal, which ultimately leads to balance and harmony. However, when only one of the forces dominates, the result is mental disorder, which means discord or failure.

In today's society, the likelihood of you getting into a life-threatening situation is much lower than when Taekwon-do was first developed. To spend several years of your life for the chance that you can protect yourself in the extreme case of a fatal attack may seem like a high price to pay. Therefore, the main motive for studying Taekwon-do should be the spiritual side of Taekwon-do. For some, the motive may be to maintain physical fitness or to train and achieve certain results in sports. Taekwon-do will suit the needs of such people very well, but a true student should never forget the important role of the philosophical and spiritual side of Taekwon-do as well as the physical. Anyone who makes this mistake will not experience all the benefits that this art can bestow on a true student.
Taekwon-do also teaches the importance of being responsible and honest in order to achieve harmony with society. A true Taekwon-do student is one who knows how to behave in any place and at any time. It is very important to note how necessary it is for our world to have sincere and trustworthy people. These are the people with whom Taekwon-do is probably most associated. This should be the distinguishing feature by which anyone can recognize a true Taekwon-do student. The philosophy of Taekwon-Do is based on ethical, moral and spiritual principles that allow people to live in harmony with themselves and with the world around them. The main goal of Taekwon-Do is to stop the suppression of the weak by the strong, through the power of humanity, justice, wisdom, spirituality and trust, and thereby contribute to the construction of a better society. Taekwon-Do should never be used by any person or group for selfish or aggressive purposes, nor should it be turned into commerce or a means of political pressure. Taekwon-Do has the following philosophical principles, according to which all serious Taekwon-Do practitioners should build their lives:
